He&#8217;s been learning web design. More accurately, he&#8217;s been learning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/dreamweaver\/\">Dreamweaver<\/a>. He&#8217;s been learning to layout pages using frames and tables. He&#8217;s been learning to use the &#8216;properties&#8217; box to set the font size, colour and type. Can he now call himself a web designer? Of course not. This isn&#8217;t his fault though, he hasn&#8217;t been taught any different.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to him last night I was shocked that, at the end of his course, he has been taught nothing about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/MarkUp\/\">HTML<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/\">W3C<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webstandards.org\">web standards<\/a>. He knows nothing of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.htmlhelp.com\/feature\/alt-table.html\">alt tags<\/a>, longdesc or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/Style\/CSS\/\">CSS<\/a> and can&#8217;t understand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gooddocuments.com\/techniques\/areframesbad_m.htm\">why I don&#8217;t use frames<\/a>. Web design is being taught at evening classes all over the country by people who taught themselves to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/software\/dreamweaver\/\">Dreamweaver<\/a>. This makes me feel a little uneasy that more and more students will learn the bad hacks and techniques of the WYSIWYG applications without every really knowing what they&#8217;re doing.<\/p>\n<p>This is the web site of his tutor: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphicstutor.co.uk\/\">http:\/\/www.graphicstutor.co.uk\/<\/a>.
